When I sat down at my computer this evening I put the TV on. The John Travolta movie, A Civil Action came on. The song that opens up the movie sounds like a version of Bo Diddley's I'm A Man, and is sung by a voice that sounds a lot like C. Beefheart. I looked it up on Amazon- it IS Captain Beefheart! They recycled the song Hard Workin' Man from the soundtrack of the movie Blue Collar. I didn't know that! That must've been pretty good for him- to be on a song leading off the soundtrack to a John Travolta movie... On Amazon a reviewer complains that the Beefheart song is not included on the soundtrack album.
Does anyone else have examples of Beefheart being re-packaged in a mass-market pop-culture context?

Tue, January 25, 2005 - 2:38 PMI've heard that they made a sort of "music video" (before there WERE music videos) of Lick My Decals Off, Baby, but I've never seen it. The Cramps covered "Hard Workin' Man" on one of their later albums. -

Fri, June 2, 2006 - 1:50 PMonly a year late posting to this but... Check out the beefheart on youtube.com .... there is a great selection of him on letterman , the video for lick my decals off... and a couple other things. The Letterman bit is compelling, you tell Dave is mostly in awe and confused - the later interview you can tell he's a bit more loosened up - Dave interviewing Tom Waits is also a great thing to witness.
