What are your favorite bands that have a Beefheart-esque element to them?
I really love US Maple's "Talker" and "Acre Thrills". I have not heard any more advanced rock music than these 2 albums actually.

Thu, January 6, 2005 - 6:34 PMWell, they're both defuncted, but I thought Morphine had some Van Vleetisms, as well as the Pixies. -
-
Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 2:32 PMThe Pixies sure do -- but I think the main reason is that an ex-magic band member (who's name I forgot) was IN Pere Ubu -- who then joined Frank Black when I toured solo -- along with none other than the drummer for the donnie and Marie show!! -- which I found HILARIOUS!! But no kidding I saw them and Frank even said the fact about the drummer and Donnie & Marie -- if only they'd been able to rock the Mormon Tabernacle!!

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 3:16 AMthe most beefheart-esque song I ever heard was 'Skeleton Key' by The Coral. They totally have their own sound, but Skeleton Key was pure homage to the God.

Fri, January 7, 2005 - 12:52 AMI always thought that early sonic youth kinda reminded me of Captain Beefheart, especially the album "Washing Machine".

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 1:54 PMI'd say any of Mike Patton's bands follow in the Beefheart vein: Mr Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, etc.

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 2:37 PMI also think that the most intense and musically precise band "Sleepytime Gorilla Museum" has kind of a Beefheartesque rattle. If you aren't familar -- you MUST check out this band -- some of the best musicians I've seen in the past decade!!! Like King Crimsonish type musical giants!!

But I recently saw their last show in Phoenix, AZ and posted some photos at my web site:

Tue, May 3, 2005 - 12:21 AMEtron Fou, definitely... And this weird Japanese band from the 70s Karuna Khyal put out one record 'Alomoni 1985'with a strongly demented Beeheart streak (think 'Mirror Man')...
And the first record by PJ Harvey, 'Dry'...

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Tue, April 19, 2005 - 5:54 PMHere are hearty seconds to the big-ups to Pere Ubu, US Maple, and Dog Faced Hermans. (I personally could never stand the Pixies, but I realize I'm in the great minority with this opinion.)
And of course, time should be spent with artists that Beefheart listened to himself, such as Muddy Waters, Ayler, John Lee Hooker, Ornette, Harry Partch, circus music, old school gospel, and the like.
Some other bands that are / were at least sometimes Beefheart-y:
Elliott Sharp's Carbon
Clawhammer
Tom Waits ca. "Rain Dogs"
Old Time Relijun
Hector Zazou -

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 4:30 PMIn the 90's I was in email contact with Zoogs Rift, who claimed to be a direct descendant and heir appearant of the Beefheart legacy. He had told me of a conversation with either the bouncer or doorman at Cathay De Grande in Hollywood that Tom Waits had requested of him to notify Waits when anyone related to Beefheart played at the club. Zoogs fit that profile.
If you have ever listened to any Howling Wolf, you will understand where Beefheart got his vocal style.
Originality is the ability to hide your sources.

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 7:25 PMOh, yes- I saw this band perform in San Diego in Summer of '05, and they get my full endorsement. And I think they would be of interest to the majority of Beefheart fans. I thought they were better live than on record.

Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 3:11 PMI remember running into LPs in the 80s from the eastrern bloc countries-seems to me that zappa and the captain had a greater influence there on music?
Blurt from the UK? Just because I like it-its gotta be Beefy

-
Re: Beefheart-esque bands?
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 3:39 PMZoambo Zoet Workestrao from Slovenia are a bit reminiscent of the Magic Band, structurally.
Uz Jsme Doma, though their Magic Band-ness may have come by way of Etron Fou.
Hungary's Kampec Dolores' mixture of punk and Magyar folk has at times, especially circa Eye of the Needle, borne some of that influence.
Austria's Scrooge likewise.
Ne Zdahli from Estonia also comes to mind to a degree.
