Re: Sam was a basket case!
Fri, May 6, 2005 - 10:11 PMI saw him at the Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood in the mid-70's, in the time of the so-called "tragic" band- in between the two Mercury albums.
Then at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach right after Shiny Beast...then a third time at the Roxy in Hollywood- I think right after Doc at the Radar Station.
Lisa- after taking a look at your profile I'm curious: How did you make the connection from Captain Beefheart to Belly Dance?

Sat, May 7, 2005 - 10:26 AMa minor thread hijack...
Man, I loved the Golden Bear! I was so sad to see it go. Never got to see capt beefheart there - but saw plenty others...john hartford, leon redbone, tom waits, patti smith...others
what a drag that place is gone. -

The Golden Bear...
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 10:55 AMYeah, we used to drive out there once in awhile, although I lived in the San Gabriel Valley at the time. I saw the Talking Heads there on their 2nd visit to LA... and Robert Hunter, the guy who wrote songs for the Grateful Dead- that's all I can remember.
That Patti Smith show must've been memorable- any stories?

Sun, May 8, 2005 - 9:53 AMMJ: everything's connected : )
I've just gradually been finding tribes about the things I like.
Actual connection is coming up, I'm working on a choreography to Abba Zabba. I doubt if it'll ever be a public peformance, but I'm sure lovin' it! (thanks barsnake) -

Re: Sam was a basket case!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 11:51 AMWell, I hope you get to perform it sometime- that'd be great.
Let us know if you do!
Did you see any of the shows where Beefheart had a dancer come out wearing curlers and a bathrobe, carrying a laundry basket while the band played "When I See Mommy I Feel Like A Mummy"?
Also, in the 80's at an LA street fair I saw a dancer perform to one of the songs from Doc at the Radar Station. However, neither of these were belly dancers.

Re: Sam was a basket case!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 11:25 PMFirst time I saw Beefheart was with Zappa doing Bongo Fury in Cincinnati.
Last time was Doc at the Radar Staton in NYC, i saw the band three times at different clubs that month it was great.
One club was so small I actually got to say hi. They played a lot of stuff from Safe as Milk at that one and I was just in another plane altogether that night!
Lordy that was a long time ago now, although it seems like just a couple years.

Re: Sam was a basket case!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 6:26 PMOnly once for me, a day or so after Don's 40th birthday and only a few weeks before he gave up performing. Went out on a good note, the Doc band was probably his strongest since the days of Harkelroad and Boston. I wish I'd seen them around the time of Decals, but I'd not even heard them yet at that point.
